Cooling System FAQ

Why is overheating so common in Florida?
Overheating is the number one cause of roadside breakdowns in Florida. The combination of ambient temperatures above 95 degrees, stop-and-go traffic on I-95 and the Palmetto, and running your AC at full blast all day puts extreme demand on your cooling system. Your engine generates more heat in Miami traffic than almost any other driving condition, and the cooling system has to work overtime to keep temperatures safe.
How often should I flush my coolant in Miami?
In Miami's extreme heat, we recommend a coolant flush every 30,000 miles or every 2 years, whichever comes first. Coolant degrades faster in high-heat environments, losing its ability to protect against corrosion and maintain proper boiling and freezing points. Old coolant can cause internal corrosion that leads to expensive radiator and water pump failures.
What should I do if my car starts overheating?
If your temperature gauge enters the red zone, immediately turn off your AC and turn your heater to full blast — this helps pull heat away from the engine. Pull over safely as soon as possible and turn off the engine. Do NOT open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Call for a tow to our Wynwood or Doral location. Continuing to drive an overheating engine can cause catastrophic and expensive damage including a blown head gasket or warped cylinder head.
How long does a cooling system repair take?
A coolant flush takes about 1 hour. Thermostat replacement is typically 1-2 hours. Radiator replacement takes 2-4 hours depending on the vehicle. Water pump replacement varies widely — on some vehicles it's 2-3 hours, while on others where it's driven by the timing belt, it can take 4-6 hours. We always provide an accurate time estimate before starting work.
