But the root cause could be a failing catalytic converter, a bad oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or even an oil-burning engine contaminating the converter. This is why a parts-store scan is not a diagnosis. Those free scans at AutoZone or Advance Auto are useful for reading stored codes, but the employee handing you a printout is not a trained technician. P0171: System Too Lean (Bank 1) Explained
P0171 means the engine's air-to-fuel mixture is running lean on Bank 1, which is the side of the engine containing cylinder number one. Lean means too much air and not enough fuel. The ECM detects this through the upstream oxygen sensor and starts adding extra fuel to compensate. When it can no longer compensate enough, the P0171 code sets. In Miami's stop-and-go traffic on US-1 or Biscayne Boulevard, a lean-running engine can cause rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and poor fuel economy.

P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
P0420 is probably the most misunderstood OBD2 code on the road. It means the catalytic converter on Bank 1 is not reducing emissions as efficiently as the ECM expects. The ECM compares the waveform from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. A healthy cat produces a relatively flat, stable downstream signal. When the cat is worn or contaminated, the downstream sensor starts mimicking the upstream sensor's switching pattern, and P0420 sets. Miami drivers often get this code after years of short-trip driving around Kendall or Coral Gables, which keeps exhaust temperatures too low to fully regenerate the catalyst.
Do Not Just Replace the Catalytic Converter First

Spark plug boots absorb moisture, ignition coils crack from heat cycling, and plug gaps widen faster on turbocharged engines running premium fuel.
Misfire Severity Matters a Lot
A steady P0300 with a slight idle roughness is different from a flashing check engine light with a violent misfire. A flashing CEL means the misfire is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter in real time, and you should pull over and stop driving as soon as it is safe. Short-trip driving is especially hard on catalytic converters. If most of your driving is under 10 minutes around Hialeah or Wynwood, your exhaust system rarely reaches the 800 to 1,000 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature needed to burn off contaminants in the catalyst. Over time, this leads to premature P0420 codes even on a relatively new converter. A regular oil change schedule also matters here because engine oil that is overdue starts burning off and depositing on the oxygen sensors and cat, making all three of these codes more likely to appear.
