- Pull live O2 sensor data and compare upstream vs downstream waveforms
- Check for exhaust leaks between the engine and the downstream sensor, especially at flex pipe joints and manifold gaskets
- Inspect for oil fouling on the converter, and confirm engine oil consumption rate
- Check fuel trims for lean or rich conditions, as a persistent rich condition will damage a new converter just as fast
- Confirm the converter is not mechanically clogged by doing a backpressure test
- Only after all of the above, evaluate whether the converter needs replacement
An exhaust backpressure test is particularly useful. You remove the upstream O2 sensor and thread in a pressure gauge. At idle, backpressure should be close to zero. Anything above 1.5 psi at idle suggests a restriction, which usually means the substrate has collapsed inside the converter. This test takes about 10 minutes and can save you from misdiagnosing a lazy sensor as a failed converter.
OEM vs Aftermarket Catalytic Converters: What You Need to Know
Florida does not have the same strict emissions standards as California, so you have more flexibility in part selection here compared to some other states.
