Glazed Pads and Rotors: A Miami Heat Special
Brake fade from heat is well documented, but glazing is a related problem that gets less attention. When brake pads get excessively hot, the resin in the friction material can harden and form a shiny, smooth surface on the pad face. The rotor face can glaze too. Both surfaces lose friction, and you get a high-pitched squeal combined with a longer stopping distance. This is common on vehicles doing repeated hard stops in Miami traffic, especially on vehicles with budget-grade pads.
Mild glazing can sometimes be addressed by light sanding or a careful bed-in procedure. Severe glazing means the pads need to be replaced. Caliper and Hardware Problems That Cause Squealing
A stuck or dragging caliper is one of the more serious causes of brake noise in South Florida. The caliper houses the pistons that press the brake pad against the rotor. If the slide pins seize up from corrosion, the caliper cannot retract properly after you release the pedal. The pad stays in partial contact with the rotor, generates constant heat, and creates a scraping or grinding noise even when you are not braking. You may also notice the car pulling toward one side when braking.
This is not a noise to monitor and see what happens. A dragging caliper can cause a rotor to warp or overheat the brake fluid to the point of boiling, which collapses pedal feel. If you notice unusual heat or a burning smell coming from one wheel after driving on the 836 or the Palmetto, pull over and let it cool before driving further.
