How a Traditional Automatic Transmission Works
A conventional automatic transmission uses a set of planetary gear sets, clutch packs, and a torque converter to step through fixed gear ratios, typically anywhere from 6 to 10 gears in a modern unit. When you accelerate from a red light on Biscayne Boulevard, the transmission moves from first gear up through the sequence, with each shift happening through hydraulic pressure controlled by the transmission control module. You feel a slight but definite step between gears, which is completely normal.
The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling between the engine and the transmission. At idle, it lets the engine spin without stalling the car. As you give it gas, the converter multiplies torque to get the car moving. Many modern automatics also have a torque converter lockup clutch that locks the converter solid at highway speed to improve fuel economy. Problems with this lockup clutch cause a specific symptom called shudder or vibration at 40 to 50 mph, and it is one of the most common issues we diagnose through our transmission service department.
What Makes Automatics Durable
Traditional automatics have been refined for decades. A well-maintained unit in a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord can last 200,000 miles or more. The key word is maintained. Transmission fluid breaks down over time, especially under the heat loads that come with Miami summer traffic. Dark brown or burnt-smelling fluid is a sign the fluid has already degraded past the point where it is protecting the clutch packs. Fresh fluid is typically red or pink with no burnt odor. If yours looks or smells otherwise, it is overdue for service.
How a CVT Works and Why It Feels Different
A continuously variable transmission uses two cone-shaped pulleys connected by a steel belt or chain instead of fixed gear sets. The pulleys change diameter continuously, which means the engine can stay at its most efficient RPM regardless of vehicle speed. There are no gear steps. The ratio changes smoothly and infinitely between a low range and a high range.
This is why a CVT car often feels like the engine is droning or floating at a fixed RPM while the car accelerates. Drivers who are used to traditional automatics sometimes think something is wrong the first time they drive a CVT-equipped vehicle. That rubbery, elastic feeling is normal for the design. Nissans, Subarus, most newer Hondas, and some Toyotas all use CVT units. If you commute from Kendall or Hialeah and your car seems to hold RPMs high during acceleration without obvious gear changes, you almost certainly have a CVT.
CVT Fluid Is Not the Same as Automatic Transmission Fluid
This is a mistake we see regularly. CVTs require their own specific fluid formulated for belt-and-pulley systems. Using standard ATF in a CVT will cause premature wear on the belt and pulleys, and in some cases will cause the transmission to shudder or slip almost immediately. Warning Signs for Automatic Transmissions
Miami driving conditions are hard on transmissions. Sitting in traffic on the Palmetto Expressway with the AC blasting puts sustained heat load on the transmission fluid and the torque converter. Here are the symptoms that tell you something is going wrong with a conventional automatic.
- Delayed engagement: you shift from Park to Drive and the car hesitates for one to three seconds before moving.
- Shift flare: engine RPM spikes between gear changes, as if the transmission momentarily loses drive.
- Hard or harsh shifts: the transmission clunks or bangs into gear, especially from first to second.
- Shudder at highway speed: a vibration or shake between 40 and 55 mph that goes away above or below that range, usually a torque converter lockup clutch issue.
- Slipping: the engine revs up but the car does not accelerate proportionally, similar to a slipping clutch on a manual car.
- Burnt fluid smell or dark brown fluid color on the dipstick.
Any of these symptoms means you should get the transmission scanned for fault codes and have the fluid inspected before the problem gets worse. A shift flare caught early might need nothing more than a fluid service. Left alone for another few thousand miles on I-95, it can turn into a rebuild.
Warning Signs for CVT Transmissions
CVTs fail differently than traditional automatics, and the warning signs reflect that. Because the steel belt or chain rides on the pulleys under constant pressure, wear on those surfaces causes specific symptoms that are easy to confuse with engine problems if you do not know what to look for.
- Shudder or vibration during acceleration from a stop, especially in the first few seconds of movement.
- Jerking or hesitation when you try to accelerate smoothly from low speed, common in Doral and Brickell traffic.
- Whining or humming noise that changes with vehicle speed rather than engine RPM.
- Overheating warning light or transmission temperature light on the dashboard.
- Sudden loss of power with the engine still running, caused by the belt slipping on the pulleys.
- A burning smell after extended stop-and-go driving.
CVT repairs are generally more expensive than automatic transmission repairs because the internal components are precision-machined and the replacement parts carry a higher price. A worn CVT belt and pulley service on a Nissan Altima or Subaru Outback can run anywhere from $1,800 to $4,500 depending on the extent of the damage. Full replacement of the unit runs higher. This is exactly why catching it at the shudder stage rather than the no-power stage saves you real money.
Fluid Service Intervals: What Miami Heat Changes
Transmission fluid service intervals vary widely by manufacturer. Some automakers call their fluid lifetime fill and say it never needs to be changed. Our ASE Certified technicians disagree with that in the context of Miami driving. Lifetime fill recommendations are based on moderate climate driving cycles. Sitting in traffic on US-1 in August with the AC running is not a moderate duty cycle. Heat is the primary enemy of transmission fluid, and fluid that breaks down loses its ability to lubricate, cool, and maintain proper hydraulic pressure inside the transmission.
Realistic Service Intervals for South Florida
- Conventional automatic transmissions: fluid drain and fill every 30,000 to 45,000 miles under normal conditions, every 25,000 to 30,000 miles if you frequently sit in heavy Miami traffic.
- CVT transmissions: most manufacturers recommend 25,000 to 30,000 miles. In Miami heat with regular stop-and-go driving, stick to 25,000 miles or sooner.
- High-mileage vehicles over 100,000 miles: drop to shorter intervals and inspect the fluid more frequently. Old degraded fluid can leave varnish deposits that fresh fluid may actually loosen, so do not go too long between services on a high-mileage car.

Diagnosis: What Happens When You Bring It In

For CVTs, we also check pulley ratio data in live scanner mode to see whether the pulleys are moving through their full range of travel during acceleration. A pulley that is stuck or slow to respond shows up clearly in live data even before the driver feels obvious symptoms. A replacement means swapping in a used unit from a salvage yard, which carries unknown mileage history. A remanufactured unit comes from a facility that rebuilds cores to OEM specification with a warranty, and it is usually the best value between cost and reliability.
