Most modern brake pads come with a small metal tab called a wear indicator. When your pads wear down to about 2 to 3 millimeters of friction material, that tab contacts the rotor and produces a high-pitched squeal. It is designed to do exactly that. It is a built-in alarm telling you to schedule a brake job soon. You will usually hear it most clearly at low speeds, like pulling off I-95 onto a surface street, and it often goes quiet once you actually press the brake pedal.
If the squeal has progressed to a grinding sound, the friction material is completely gone and the metal backing plate is now cutting into your rotor. At that point you are looking at rotor replacement in addition to pads, which roughly doubles the cost. A basic pad replacement on a common sedan runs $150 to $280 per axle. Add rotor resurfacing or replacement and the job can reach $350 to $550 per axle depending on the vehicle. Catching it at the squeal stage saves real money.
Morning Squeak That Goes Away: Rust on the Rotor Surface
If your car squeaks on the first few stops of the morning and then goes completely quiet, you are almost certainly dealing with surface rust on the rotors. A brake caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor when you press the pedal and is supposed to fully release when you let go. When a caliper sticks, one or more pistons do not retract properly and the pad drags against the rotor constantly. You will notice a few things: a burning smell after highway driving on the 836 or the Palmetto Expressway, one wheel that feels hot to the touch compared to the others, and a car that feels sluggish like it is working harder than it should.
Miami heat accelerates caliper seal degradation. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. As the fluid breaks down, it lowers the boiling point and causes the rubber seals inside the caliper to swell and harden. Once those seals lose their flexibility, the piston can stick in the extended position. A caliper replacement runs $200 to $400 per corner including labor. A brake fluid flush, which should be done every two years, can prevent this from happening in the first place. When Squeak Becomes Grind: Knowing When to Stop Driving
A squeak is a warning. A grind is an emergency. Once you hear metal-on-metal grinding, you should not be driving the car any farther than necessary to get it to a shop.
