Why does my car AC freeze up and stop cooling?
A car AC that freezes up and stops cooling usually has excess moisture in the system, an incorrect refrigerant charge, or a malfunctioning expansion valve causing ice to form on the evaporator. When ice builds up, it blocks airflow and the vents blow warm even though the system is running. Miami's high humidity makes moisture intrusion especially likely if the system was opened or recharged without a proper vacuum to remove water. Sometimes the issue is a stuck expansion valve flooding the evaporator with too much refrigerant. The fix involves evacuating the system, replacing the receiver-drier or expansion valve, and recharging correctly. At Motoro Cars, our ASE-certified technicians diagnose freeze-ups properly so they do not keep recurring. Skipping the vacuum step is a common shortcut that causes this exact problem.
