How does the anti-lock braking system (ABS) work?

The anti-lock braking system, or ABS, prevents your wheels from locking up during hard or emergency braking so you keep steering control. Wheel speed sensors monitor how fast each wheel spins, and when the system detects a wheel about to lock, it rapidly pulses brake pressure to that wheel many times per second. This keeps the tire rolling instead of skidding, which shortens stopping distance on most surfaces and lets you steer around hazards. In rainy Miami, ABS is especially valuable because wet roads make lockup more likely. You may feel a pulsing in the pedal during a hard stop, which is the system working normally. If the ABS light is on, the feature may be disabled and should be checked. At Motoro Cars, our free brake inspection includes scanning the ABS and checking wheel sensors. Our ASE-certified techs in Wynwood and Doral can help. Call Wynwood at (786) 634-2002 or Doral at (786) 633-3220.
