What is the minimum brake pad thickness before replacement?

Brake pads should generally be replaced when the friction material wears down to about 3 millimeters, and they must not be allowed to go below the manufacturer's minimum, often around 2 millimeters or less. New pads typically start with 10 to 12 millimeters of material, so 3 millimeters is the common benchmark to plan replacement before noise and rotor damage begin. Many pads also have a metal wear indicator that squeals around this point as a built-in warning. Waiting until the pads are nearly metal-on-metal risks scoring the rotors and lengthening your stopping distance. Measuring thickness directly is far more reliable than guessing by mileage. At Motoro Cars, our free brake inspection measures your pad thickness with precision so you replace at the right time. Our ASE-certified techs in Wynwood and Doral can help.
