What is brake fade and why does it happen?
Brake fade is a temporary loss of braking power caused by excessive heat in the brake system. When you brake hard repeatedly, such as descending a long grade or in heavy stop-and-go traffic, the pads, rotors, and fluid can overheat. This causes the pad material to lose friction or the fluid to boil and form compressible vapor, both of which make the pedal feel soft and reduce stopping power. Fade usually recovers once the brakes cool, but it can be dangerous in the moment. Causes include old moisture-laden brake fluid, worn or low-quality pads, and undersized brakes for the load. Fresh fluid and quality pads rated for heat help prevent it. At Motoro Cars, our free brake inspection checks fluid condition and pad quality to reduce fade risk.
