Timing Belt & Chain FAQ

What happens if my timing belt breaks?
On interference engines — which most modern cars have — a broken timing belt causes the pistons to collide with the valves, resulting in catastrophic engine damage. Bent valves, cracked pistons, and damaged cylinder heads are common. The repair cost for a broken timing belt failure often exceeds $3,000-$5,000 or can total the vehicle entirely. Replacing the belt on schedule is far cheaper than the alternative.
When should I replace my timing belt?
Most manufacturers recommend timing belt replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on your vehicle. In Miami's extreme heat, rubber components degrade faster, so we often recommend the earlier end of that range. Check your owner's manual for your specific interval, or bring your vehicle to our Wynwood or Doral location and we'll look it up for you.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
Yes, we strongly recommend it. On most vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt and is located behind the same covers. The labor to access the water pump is essentially the same as the timing belt. Replacing them together saves you hundreds in labor costs compared to doing them separately. A water pump failure after a timing belt job means paying for all that labor again.
What's the difference between a timing belt and timing chain?
A timing belt is made of reinforced rubber and has a specific replacement interval — it will eventually break if not replaced. A timing chain is metal and typically lasts much longer, sometimes the life of the engine. However, timing chains can stretch over time, causing rough running, check engine lights, and timing-related codes. Chain-equipped vehicles need tensioner and guide service when symptoms appear.
